Phlebotomy Training

The Center for Clinical Investigation offers a Phlebotomy Training course for BWH research coordinators, assistants, and study staff. This training is for study staff members who draw blood for clinical research studies as part of their current job requirements. The Phlebotomy Training session consists of three parts: a lecture on phlebotomy procedures, an observed phlebotomy on a simulation device, and practice venipuncture on a simulation device.

After finishing the course, it is recommended that the study staff member complete 10 blood draws observed by the PI and/or clinical staff. A PI-signed document, validating study staff competency to complete research venipunctures independently, should be kept on file.

The cost for participating in this course is $10 per participant and requires a BWH Cost Center Number. Further details will be provided to those who register about a week before the course date.

Space is limited to allow one-on-one learning.

Vital signs included are temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure. Underlying the demonstrations of taking vital signs and performing EKGs will be the concepts of standard precautions, patient identification, interpersonal communication, and accurate documentation.

Participants will be required to validate competency under the supervision of their PIs within their own research settings.

The cost for participating in this course is $15 per participant and requires a BWH Cost Center Number. Further details will be provided to those who register about a week before the course date.
